For anybody who owns a home, or even anybody that lives in an apartment you’ve got to be concerned about your security. Home security is a $60 billion a year industry. If you stop and think about it, it makes sense that so many people would buy some security products or security systems because they have a substantial amount of money invested in their home and furnishings. That is certainly worth protecting.
One out of every six homes is the target of a burglar every year and, according to FBI statistics the value of goods taken in a home burglary averages close to $1900 not to mention another $1500-$2000 worth of damage done to the home in the process.
There are many things that you can do to improve your home’s security that don’t have to cost a fortune or are not that complicated. Here we are going to discuss easy steps to improve it.
Three Easy Steps Toward Improving Your Home Security
1. Do the free things first. They are by definition the cheapest and usually are the easiest just requiring some of your time and a little of your effort. They include starting or joining a neighborhood watch program. That is a successful program that improves the security of not only your home but that of your neighbors’. It is free and easy to do or join. Contact your local police department to see if one already exists in your neighborhood. If not, they can help you get one going.
Then trim away shrubs or bushes around lower-level doors and windows. Most burglaries are done during the daytime so they are looking for potential hiding places.
Lock all your doors and windows even when you’re at home. Believe it or not, close to 40% of all home burglaries happen through unlocked doors and windows. Don’t make it easy for the bad guys
2. Burglars look for security signs that warn of a vicious guard dog-they hate dogs-or of a CCTV system in place. They don’t like cameras either. Sometimes just the security sign will do. You don’t need the dog or the CCTV system.
3. Put inexpensive window and door alarms on all your windows and doors. Some home security alarms are so loud they can be heard from at least a quarter of a mile away. They act as a successful deterrent to home burglary by scaring away the intruders.
Those are three easy steps you can take to improve your home security. They are either free or cheap to do and well worth the effort.
